Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Review

The Big Mouth centrifugal juicer finished near the middle of the pack. It does a better job at juicing hard and soft produce than many and retails for less than half of other centrifugal models. This juicer is also slightly easier to clean and handles leafy greens more than adequately.

Performance Comparison

Juice Quality

This metric is the most important of the entire group. Our tests for this category compared the taste, texture, and consistency of three different juice recipes. The Big Mouth did quite well, holding its own with an above-average score.

For our first recipe — a concoction consisting of beetroots, carrots, apples, celery, cucumbers, and ginger root — the Big Mouth delivered a middle-of-the-road performance. It produced juice with great texture, but the taste seemed slightly off compared to the other tested models. It was palatable but wasn't our favorite. Our testers found it to be substantially less tasty than the beverages produced by some of the other, higher-quality juicers.

The Big Mouth did much better in our second test, a recipe of romaine lettuce, apples, and oranges. The final drink was mildly pulpy, but overall, it had a great texture and tasted fine. Our third drink for testing combined beetroot, apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, and oranges. The mixture produced by this juicer was delicious but had a slightly overpowering beet flavor. There was a decent amount of pulp, and the texture was somewhat watery, but the quality was still above average.

Soft Produce

This metric focused on the actual yield when juicing various types of softer food and the quality of the juice generated. We used cucumbers, celery, apples, and oranges to judge performance.

The Big Mouth started this metric with a solid performance at juicing cucumbers, tying for one of the higher scores. It generated an above-average juice yield, exceeding the average by about 15mL, and produced only mild amounts of foam, though there were moderate amounts of pulp. Performance fell a little when it came to juicing celery, with the Big Mouth only producing an average amount of juice. This juice also had moderate pulp and foam and separated relatively quickly.

Moving on to juicing oranges, the Big Mouth failed to impress. It produced about 15mL less juice than the average with little pulp and approximately a half-inch of foam on top. It did a little better at juicing apples, but not by much. We finished with an essentially average yield of juice, but there was tons of pulp in the drink. The juice also rapidly separated, and there was a lot of foam on the surface.

Hard Produce

We evaluated how well each juicer did at juicing sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets for this metric. We used an identical set of criteria as the previous metric to score performance, and the Big Mouth again delivered an average performance.

The Big Mouth started this metric with a somewhat lackluster performance at juicing carrots, generating a less than average amount of juice with mild amounts of pulp. It did much better at juicing beets, actually earning one of the highest scores of the group. We received well above the average amount of juice with only mild amounts of pulp, though it created a decent amount of foam.

We finished out our testing for hard produce with sweet potatoes and again got an admirably average performance. The Big Mouth yielded the amount of juice we got from most juicers in our lineup, with moderate amounts of pulp.

Leafy Greens

For this metric, we used spinach, wheatgrass, and curly-leaf kale for our assessments, again using the same criteria to assess the final product. Continuing its trend, the Big Mouth landed in the middle of the pack, though it had some highs and lows.

This juicer did amazingly well at juicing wheatgrass, earning one of the highest scores of the group and only outperformed by the best products in the lineup. The Big Mouth generated about 4.3mL of juice, well above the 2.5mL average.

Unfortunately, performance dropped considerably when we tried juicing kale in the Big Mouth. Its yield was less than average, but only a minuscule amount of foam was produced. This juicer also struggled with spinach, again having a lower than average yield, but this time producing about an inch of foam.

Cleaning

For our final metric, we judged the difficulty in cleaning each juicer. We looked at each component, noting any problems we found in cleaning them, whether or not they are dishwasher-safe, and include a cleaning brush. The Big Mouth finished solidly in this area.

The Big Mouth does include a cleaning brush, but we didn't find it to be terribly durable, as it was already starting to lose bristles by the conclusion of our tests. However, the components are safe to clean in the dishwasher, and none had any areas that are a huge pain to wash by hand.

Should You Buy the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth?

The Hamilton Beach Big Mouth is the best bet for those shopping for a new juicer on a budget. It does particularly well at juicing wheatgrass and beets, makes tasty juice, and isn't a huge hassle to clean. Overall, it's not the best but usually retails for substantially less than the highest-scoring models. This juicer is a fantastic value, holding its own with models that cost hundreds of dollars more.

What Other Juicer Should You Consider?

If budget isn't a concern, and you want a centrifugal device, then the Breville Juice Fountain would be our pick. This machine is still relatively inexpensive compared to the top masticator at twice the price. It has impressive performance for hard produce and ease of cleaning.
